CLASS and MECHANISM of Action

Generic "Zyrtec" is a medication used for the treatment of allergy, hayfever, angioedema, and hives. It is a second-generation H1-receptor antagonist antihistamine and works by blocking H1 histamine receptors. It is a major metabolite of hydroxyzine, and has the same basic side effects.
When you are exposed to something you are allergic to, your body makes something called histamine. Histamine causes you to have allergy symptoms. Things like sneezing and itchy eyes. Generic "Zyrtec" is an antihistamine, which helps block the action of histamine to help relieve you of your indoor and outdoor allergy symptoms.
Active Ingredients: Cetirizine HCl
Inactive Ingredients: glacial acetic acid; glycerin; grape flavor; banana flavor; methylparaben; propylene glycol; propylparaben; sodium acetate; sugar syrup and water.

What is Generic "Zyrtec" PRESCRIBED For?

Generic "Zyrtec" is prescribed to treat the sneezing; itchy, runny nose; and itchy, red, watery eyes caused by seasonal allergies such as hay fever. Generic "Zyrtec" also relieves the symptoms of year-round allergies due to dust, mold, and animal dander. This medication is also used in the treatment of chronic itchy skin and hives.

How Should I Take Generic "Zyrtec"?

Take Generic "Zyrtec" once a day, exactly as prescribed. This medication can be taken with or without food.
Generic "Zyrtec" may make your mouth dry. Sucking hard candy, chewing a stick of gum, or melting bits of ice in your mouth can provide relief.
Always keep the Generic "Zyrtec" in the same container it came in. Make sure it is tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store this medication at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture; do not store this medication in the bathroom.

What are the CONTRAINDICATIONS for taking Generic "Zyrtec"?

You should not take Generic "Zyrtec" if you are sensitive to any ingredient in ZYRTEC or ZYRTEC-D 12 HOUR (cetirizine HCl 5 mg/pseudoephedrine HCl 120 mg) Extended Release Tablets.
Do not take Generic "Zyrtec" if you are sensitive to a drug called hydroxyzine.
You may not be able to take a full dose of Generic "Zyrtec" if you have liver or kidney problems, or if you are age 77 or older.
In clinical studies of patients with allergic rhinitis who also suffer from mild to moderate asthma, no adverse effects of Generic "Zyrtec" on lung function were observed.

What Happens if I MISS A DOSE?

Do not take a double dose of this medication unless your doctor directs otherwise. If you miss a dose take it as soon as possible but if it's high time for the next dose just skip the missed one and continue your usual schedule.

What Happens if I OVERDOSE?

Any medication taken in excess can have serious consequences. In adults, the primary symptom of a Generic "Zyrtec" overdose is extreme sleepiness. In children, restlessness and irritability may precede drowsiness. If you suspect an overdose, seek medical treatment immediately.

  • Antidepressants such as Tofranil, Elavil, Ludiomil, and Anafranil
  • Muscle relaxants such as Valium and Soma
  • Pain-relieving narcotics such as codeine, Demerol, and Percocet
  • Sedatives such as Nembutal, Seconal, and phenobarbital
  • Sleeping pills such as Halcion, Restoril, and Ambien
  • High doses of theophylline (Theo-Dur)

Additional Information

Do not share your medicine with others and do not take anyone else's medicine. Keep all medicine out of the reach of children and pets.
