CLASS and MECHANISM of Action
Generic "Soma"is a muscle relaxant. It is used with rest, physical therapy, and other measures to relax muscles and relieve pain and discomfort caused by strains, sprains, and other muscle injuries. This medication is sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.
Generic "Soma" works by blocking the communication between nerves in the brain and spinal cord that are responsible for awakeness and arousal. By blocking these CNS signals, signals that tell muscles to contract and tighten are also blocked.
Active Ingredients: carisoprodol
Inactive Ingredients: potassium sorbate, starch, alginic acid, magnesium stearate, tribasic calcium phosphate.
What is Generic "Soma" PRESCRIBED For?
Generic "Soma" is used for the treatment of pain caused by muscular-skeletal injury. It is used in combination with rest, physical therapy, pain medicine, and other therapies.
How Should I Take Generic "Soma"?
Take this medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take the medication in larger amounts, or take it for longer than recommended by your doctor. Follow the directions on your prescription label. Take each dose with a full glass of water.
The maximum amount of Generic "Soma" you should take in one day is 1,400 mg (4 tablets).
Store between 59 and 86 degrees F (that's room temperature), away from light and moisture. The Bathroom is NOT the place to store Generic "Soma" medications!
What are the CONTRAINDICATIONS for taking Generic "Soma"?
Do not take Generic "Soma" if you have acute intermittent porphyria. Before taking Generic "Soma", tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease. You may need a lower dose or special monitoring during your therapy. It is not known whether Generic "Soma" will harm an unborn baby. Do not take Generic "Soma" without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant. It is also not known whether Generic "Soma" passes into breast milk. Do not take Generic "Soma" without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. Generic "Soma" is not approved for use in children younger than 12 years of age.
What Happens if I MISS A DOSE?
Do not take a double dose of this medication unless your doctor directs otherwise. If you miss a dose take it as soon as possible but if it's high time for the next dose just skip the missed one and continue your usual schedule.
What Happens if I OVERDOSE?
If you overdose with Generic "Soma" seek emergency medical attention. Symptoms of a Generic "Soma" overdose include low blood pressure (weakness, fainting, confusion), decreased breathing, and unconsciousness.
What are the possible SIDE EFFECTS of Generic "Soma"?
This medication may cause stomach upset, heartburn, headache, dizziness or drowsiness. If these symptoms persist or worsen, notify your doctor promptly. Inform your doctor promptly if you develop: persistent stomach pain, rapid heart rate. In the unlikely event you have a serious allergic reaction to this drug, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
What other drugs can INTERACT with Generic "Soma"?
It is always best to tell your doctor you medical history as well as any other medications (both over-the-counter and prescribed), as well as herbal supplements, vitamins and minerals. Specifically, tell him/her about:
- anti-histamines
- anti-depressants
- sedatives
- tranquilizers
- sleep aids
- pain medication
- barbiturates
- seizure medication
Any medication that induces drowsiness will affect you if you also take Generic "Soma".
Additional Information
Do not share your medicine with others and do not take anyone else's medicine. Keep all medicine out of the reach of children and pets. Keep a list of all your medicines (prescription, herbal/supplements, vitamins, over-the-counter) with you. Give this list to healthcare provider (doctor, nurse, pharmacist, physician assistant). Talk with healthcare provider before starting any new medicine, including over-the-counter or natural products (herbs, vitamins).
