CLASS and MECHANISM of Action

Generic "Retin-A" belongs to a family of drugs which are similar to Vitamin A. Generic "Retin-A" works best when used in combination with alpha hydroxyacid preparations. If used over a period of years, Generic "Retin-A" will continue to reverse aging of the skin and can continue improving the skin’s appearance even ten years after starting treatment.
Although the exact mechanism of action of Generic "Retin-A" is unknown, current evidence suggests that the effectiveness of Generic "Retin-A" in acne is due primarily to its ability to modify abnormal follicular keratinization. Comedones form in follicles with an excess of keratinized epithelial cells. Generic "Retin-A" promotes detachment of cornified cells and the enhanced shedding of corneocytes from the follicle.
By increasing the mitotic activity of follicular epithelia, Generic "Retin-A" also increases the turnover rate of thin, loosely-adherent corneocytes.
Active Ingredients: tretinoin
Inactive Ingredients: PPG-20 methyl glucose ether distearate, cyclomethicone and dimethicone copolyol, glycerin, disodium EDTA, purified water, carbomer 974P (0.04% formulation), carbomer 934P (0.1% formulation), propylene glycol, sorbic acid, benzyl alcohol, trolamine, and butylated hydroxytoluene.

What is Generic "Retin-A" PRESCRIBED For?

Generic "Retin-A" is used in the treatment of acne. Generic "Retin-A" is often prescribed to younger, active individuals who want to combat the aging effects of sun exposure. Patients who are planning to have a chemical peel treatment are often instructed by their doctors to use Generic "Retin-A" as a preparation treatment; Generic "Retin-A" thins the skin's outer layer, allowing the acid solution used in a peel treatment to penetrate more deeply and evenly. Generic "Retin-A" is not recommended for pregnant women or nursing mothers, because its effects on the fetus and nursing infant are still being studied.

How Should I Take Generic "Retin-A"?

Apply a thin layer to affected area once a day at bedtime. Use a gauze pad or cotton swab to apply the liquid. Wash your hands immediately after use. Using this medication more frequently or in excessive amounts does not improve the results, but may increase side effects. Avoid applying near the eyes, mouth, or open cuts since this medication can irritate sensitive skin. Acne may appear to worsen when the medication is first used; continue therapy. It may take three to six weeks before the full benefits of this medication are seen. Use mild soap when washing your face. Do not wash face excessively. Abrasive soaps, cleansers, medicated creams or lotions can increase skin irritation. Consult your doctor or pharmacist about their use. Use other acne preparations with caution while using this medication.
Store at room temperature away from sunlight. Keep this and all medications out of the reach of children

What are the CONTRAINDICATIONS for taking Generic "Retin-A"?

If you are sensitive to or have ever had an allergic reaction to Generic "Retin-A", avoid using it. The safety and effectiveness of long-term use of Generic "Retin-A" in the treatment of disorders other than acne have not been established.
The medication may cause a brief feeling of warmth or slight stinging when applied. If it causes an abnormal irritation, redness, blistering, or peeling of the skin, notify your doctor. He may suggest that you use Generic "Retin-A" less frequently, discontinue use temporarily, or discontinue use. If a severe sensitivity reaction or chemical irritation occurs, you will probably need to stop using the drug.

What Happens if I MISS A DOSE?

Do not use a double dose of this medication unless your doctor directs otherwise. If you miss a dose take it as soon as possible but if it's high time for the next dose just skip the missed one and continue your usual schedule.

What Happens if I OVERDOSE?

What other drugs can INTERACT with Generic "Retin-A"?

  • Preparations containing sulfur (ointments and other preparations used to treat skin disorders and infections)
