CLASS and MECHANISM of Action
Generic "Monopril" is in a class of drugs called ACE inhibitors which inhibit ACE and block the formation of angiotensin II. Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) is the enzyme in blood which controls the formation of angiotensin II, a chemical in blood that causes constriction of arteries and veins. Constriction of arteries and veins elevates blood pressure. By blocking the formation of angiotensin II, Generic "Monopril" relaxes the arteries and veins and lowers blood pressure. By reducing blood pressure, Generic "Monopril" also reduces the work that the heart must do to pump blood through the arteries and veins. This improves the output of blood from the heart.
Active Ingredients: Fosinopril sodium
Inactive Ingredients: anhydrous lactose, microcrystalline cellulose, crospovidone, povidone
and sodium stearyl fumarate.
What is Generic Generic "Monopril"PRESCRIBED for?
Generic "Monopril" is effective when used alone or in combination with other medications for the treatment of high blood pressure. Generic "Monopril" is also prescribed for heart failure.
How should I take Generic "Monopril"?
Generic "Monopril" comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It is usually taken once or twice a day. To help you remember to take Generic "Monopril", take it around the same time every day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take Generic "Monopril" exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.
Your doctor will probably start you on a low dose of Generic "Monopril" and gradually increase your dose. Generic "Monopril" controls high blood pressure and heart failure but does not cure them. Continue to take Generic "Monopril" even if you feel well. Do not stop taking Generic "Monopril" without talking to your doctor.
STORAGE
Do not store Generic "Monopril" in the bathroom or near a sink. Do not leave it in the car on hot days or on window sills. Heat and dampness can destroy some medicines. Store at room temperature away from excess heat and moisture and light.
What are the CONTRADICTIONS for taking Generic "Monopril"?
Do not take Generic "Monopril" if you are sensitive to or have ever had an allergic reaction to Generic "Monopril" or similar anticholesterol drugs, you should not take this medication. Make sure that your doctor is aware of any drug reactions that you have experienced.
Unless you are directed to do so by your doctor, do not take Generic "Monopril" if you are being treated for liver disease.
Do not take Generic "Monopril" if you are pregnant or nursing.
What Happens if I MISS A DOSE?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
What Happens if I OVERDOSE?
In case of overdose, call your local poison control center. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services. Symptoms of overdose may include dizziness, lightheadedness and fainting
What are the possible SIDE EFFECTS of Generic "Monopril"?
Generic Generic "Monopril" is generally well tolerated. The most common side effects are:
- headache
- cough
- dizziness
- diarrhea
- fatigue
- nausea
- vomiting
- complaints of sexual dysfunction
- abnormal liver tests.
Impairment of kidney function has been reported with ACE inhibitors, especially in patients with severe heart failure or kidney disease.
What other drugs can INTERACT with Generic "Monopril"?
If Generic "Monopril" is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Generic "Monopril" with the following:
- Antacids such as Mylanta and Maalox
- Lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid)
- Potassium preparations such as K+10 and K-Lyte
- Potassium-sparing diuretics such as Moduretic and Aldactone
- Thiazide diuretics such as Diucardin and Diuril
Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with Generic "Monopril" or affect your condition. Talk to your doctor and pharmacist before taking any prescription or over-the-counter medicines, including vitamins, minerals, and herbal products.
Additional Information
Keep all appointments with your doctor and the laboratory. Your blood pressure should be checked regularly to determine your response to Generic "Monopril". Your doctor may order certain lab tests to check your body's response to Generic "Monopril".
