CLASS and MECHANISM of Action
Generic "Mevacor" is a member of the drug class of statins, used for lowering cholesterol (hypolipidemic agent) in those with hypercholesterolemia and so preventing cardiovascular disease. The mode of action of statins is HMG-CoA reductase enzyme inhibition. This enzyme is needed by the body to make cholesterol. Generic "Mevacor" causes cholesterol to be lost from LDL, but also reduces the concentration of circulating LDL (low density lipoprotein) particles. Apolipoprotein B concentration falls substantially during treatment with Generic "Mevacor". Generic "Mevacor's" ability to lower LDL is thought to be due to a reduction in VLDL, which is a precursor to LDL. Also, Generic "Mevacor" may increase the number of LDL receptors on the surface of cell membranes, and thus increase the breakdown of LDL
Active Ingredient: Lovastatin
Inactive Ingredients: inactive ingredients: cellulose, lactose, magnesium stearate, and starch. Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) is added as a preservative. Tablets MEVACOR 20 mg also contain FD&C Blue 2.
What is Generic "Mevacor" PRESCRIBED for?
Generic "Mevacor" is used, along with diet, to lower cholesterol levels in people with primary hypercholesterolemia (too much cholesterol in the bloodstream). High cholesterol levels foster the buildup of artery-clogging plaque, which can be especially dangerous when it collects in the vessels serving the muscles of the heart. Generic "Mevacor" is prescribed to prevent this problem called coronary heart diseaseor to slow its advance if the arteries are already clogging up.
How should I take Generic "Mevacor"?
Take Generic "Mevacor" tablets by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Take Generic "Mevacor" tablets with food. If you take Generic "Mevacor" once a day, take the dose with the evening meal. Swallow the tablets with a drink of water. Do not take Generic "Mevacor" with grapefruit juice; orange juice may be used instead. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed. Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.
STORAGE
Store at room temperature away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom) and light. Keep all medicines away from children and pets. Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed.
What are the CONTRADICTIONS for taking Generic "Mevacor"?
Do not take Generic "Mevacor" if you are sensitive to or have ever had an allergic reaction to Generic "Mevacor" or similar anticholesterol drugs, you should not take this medication. Make sure that your doctor is aware of any drug reactions that you have experienced.
Unless you are directed to do so by your doctor, do not take this medication if you are being treated for liver disease.
Do not take Generic "Mevacor" if you are pregnant or nursing.
What Happens if I MISS A DOSE?
.Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one
What Happens if I OVERDOSE?
There have been no reported cases of overdose with Generic "Mevacor". In case of overdoseis suspected, call emergency or your local poison control center.
What are the possible SIDE EFFECTS of Generic "Mevacor"?
Generic "Mevacor" is generally well tolerated. Any side effects that have occurred have usually been mild and short-lived. If any side effects develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Generic "Mevacor".
Side effects may include:

- blurred vision
- constipation
- diarrhea
- dizziness
- gas
- headache
- heartburn
- indigestion
- itching
- muscle cramps
- muscle pain
- muscle weakness with rash,
- nausea
- rashweakness
What other drugs can INTERACT with Generic "Mevacor"?
Generic "Mevacor"? tends to enhance the blood-thinning effect of Coumadin. In rare instances, it can also cause muscle pain and potential kidney damage when combined with the following:
- Amiodarone (Cordarone)
- Clarithromycin (Biaxin)
- Clofibrate (Atromid-S)
- Cyclosporine (Sandimmune, Neoral)
- Erythromycin (E.E.S., PCE, others)
- Fenofibrate (Tricor)
- Fluconazole (DiFlucan)
- Gemfibrozil (Lopid)
- Itraconazole (Sporanox)
- Ketoconazole (Nizoral)
- Nefazodone (Serzone)
- Nicotinic acid or niacin (Niaspan)
- Protease inhibitors (a type of drug for HIV) such as Agenerase, Crixivan, Fortovase, Invirase, Norvir, and Viracept
- Verapamil (Calan)
If you are taking Generic "Mevacor" with any of these drugs, (or with large quantities of grapefruit juice), alert your doctor immediately at the first sign of muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, especially if accompanied by fever or general body discomfort. If you need to take erythromycin, Biaxin, Nizoral, or Sporanox, the doctor may temporarily take you off Generic "Mevacor".
