CLASS and MECHANISM of Action
Generic "Loratadine" is a tricyclic antihistamine, which has a selective and peripheral H1-antagonist action. It has a long-lasting effect and does not normally cause drowsiness because it does not readily enter the central nervous system. Generic "Loratadine" relieves the sneezing, runny nose, stuffiness, itching, and tearing eyes caused by hay fever or other upper respiratory allergies. It also relieves the swollen, red, itchy patches of skin caused by hives.
Active Ingredient: micronized loratadine and antihistamine
Inactive Ingredients: magnesium stearate, corn starch and lactose.
What is Generic "Loratadine" PRESCRIBED For?
Generic "Loratadine" is prescribed for treatment of allergies such as difficulty in breathing, hives, and other allergic inflammations. It is a used to treat runny nose, itching, watery eyes and other symptoms related to allergies.
How Should I Take Generic "Loratadine"?
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. IF instructions are not that clear, verify it with a nurse or with a pharmacist. Generic "Loratadine" may be taken on an empty stomach or with food. Each tablet must be taken with a full glass of water, that’s about 8 ounces. It is recommended to swallow them whole. Follow your doctor’s advice on the frequency of medicine intake. Do not increase your dose or take this more often than directed. Do not take this medication for several days before allergy testing since test results can be affected.

Store Generic "Loratadine" at room temperature in a tightly closed container, away from heat and moisture.
What are the CONTRAINDICATIONS for taking Generic "Loratadine"?
Do not take Generic "Loratadine" if you are sensitive to or have ever had an allergic reaction to it. Make sure your doctor is aware of any drug reactions that you have experienced.
The effects of Generic "Loratadine" during pregnancy have not been adequately studied. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, inform your doctor immediately.
Generic "Loratadine" appears in breast milk and could affect a nursing infant. If this medication is essential to your health, your doctor may advise you to discontinue breastfeeding until your treatment with Generic "Loratadine" is finished.
What Happens if I MISS A DOSE?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
What happens if I OVERDOSE?
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include unusual drowsiness, headache, and fast heartbeat..
What are the possible SIDE EFFECTS of Generic "Loratadine"?
Side effects, that may go away during treatment, include headache, dry mouth, dry nose, hoarseness, and fatigue. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. Contact your doctor immediately if you develop a rapid or pounding heartbeat, dizziness, diarrhea, nervousness, wheezing, stomach pain, unusual weakness, or hyperactivity while taking this medicine. An allergic reaction to Generic "Loratadine" is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.
This medicine does not usually cause drowsiness when used at recommended doses and under normal circumstances. However, use caution before engaging in activities that require alertness until you know how you react to Generic "Loratadine". If you notice any unusual effects, check with your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.
What other drugs can INTERACT with Generic "Loratadine"?
Although no harmful interactions with Generic "Loratadine" have been reported, there is a theoretical possibility of an interaction with the following drugs:
- Antibiotics such as erythromycin
- Cimetidine (Tagamet)
- Ketoconazole (Nizoral)
Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription products you may use. Check the labels on all your medicines (e.g., cough-and-cold products) because they may contain additional antihistamines that could increase your risk for side effects.
In addition, the following medicines can make you feel drowsy:
- alcohol
- barbiturate medicines for inducing sleep or treating seizures (convulsions)
- medicines for anxiety or sleeping problems, such as alprazolam, diazepam, or temazepam
- medicines for hay fever and other allergies such as antihistamines
- medicines for mental problems, including anxiety, depression and psychotic disturbances
- medicines for pain
Ask your pharmacist about the safe use of those products. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
Additional Information
If your symptoms do not improve or if they become worse, contact your doctor. Do not share this medicine with others for whom it was not prescribed. Do not use this medicine for other health conditions. Keep this medicine out of the reach of children and pets. If using this medicine for an extended period of time, obtain refills before your supply runs out.
